Overview

This webinar will provide a review of topometry optimization. Topometry optimization is an element-by-element sizing optimization method that allows users to design individually the dimensions of each element of a finite element mesh, as opposed to traditional sizing, where elements are designed in groups. Topometry optimization was originally developed for the Genesis software more than 8 years ago to satisfy users’ needs to improve performance of structures and to obtain light designs. Since then topometry has been continually enhanced to satisfy additional requirements. Some of these requirements are similar to topology optimization requirements: for example, topometry needs to include options for satisfying fabrication constraints and symmetry. Like topology optimization this capability allows finding the optimal location of void material but is not limited to that, as it can produce continuous variation of geometric properties and dimensions.
Over the years, topometry optimization has been successfully used in the design of a variety of structures. The webinar will show several examples using the Genesis software and some examples showing the coupling of Genesis with LS-DYNA to topometrically optimize for non-linear analysis responses. In addition, the webinar will show comparisons between topometry, sizing and topology optimization methods which are also available in Genesis.
